The beautifully adorned camels steal the spotlight at the much acclaimed Bikaner Camel Festival, which is celebrated every year in the month of January and holds a significant place for the people of Rajasthan. The avant-garde festival is exclusively dedicated to the ship of the dessert that was the sole source of transportation and livelihood for the native people of Rajasthan and surrounding places. In the earlier times, there was limited development and thus, no source of technology and automobiles for people. Camels were a good substitute then.
The festival observes a huge gathering of visitors, foreign immigrants and the villagers. The two-day camel celebration commences with a magnificent procession of the beautifully adorned camels against a breathtaking backdrop of the ancient Junagarh Fort which look mesmerising and awestruck. As the camels proceed to the sandy spreads of the Polo Ground, the visitors follow suit to observe the noteworthy events.
The colourful and vibrant costumes adorned by the camels and owners with a touch of dazzling accessories arouse excitement amidst the gathering. The camels follow instructions of their respective owners while performing an awe-gaping dance. The fun-loving festival also caters the special dishes made from camel milk. The catering includes tea and sweets along with the Bikaneri Bhujia (Savoury snacks)
Some of the interesting highlights of the festival are camel races, camel milking, fur cutting design, best breed competition, camel bands, traditional folk dance and music. With music and dance performances, food, crafts display and lot more, the festival is one of the most enthusiastic, welcoming and colourful events in the beautiful city of Bikaner which makes it a must visit for every tourist.
