How to observe fast on Devshayani Ekadashi?

Devshayani Ekadashi is celebrated on the eleventh day of the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) of Ashada month that falls in the month (June-July).  Devshayani Ekadashi is also referred as Ashadi Ekadashi or Hari It is another name of Lord Vishnu.Shayani Ekadashi.

On this day, people celebrations take place in Lord Vitthal Temple in Padharpur, Maharastra. Lord Vitthal is considered as a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. He is the popular deity in Maharashtra. For some Hindu communities, the fast for four months, Chatur Maas begins from this day, as according to Hindu mythology, VishnuVishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
slept on this day for four months.
 

In 2015, Devshayani Ekadashi fast will be observed on 27th July. The auspecious time to offer prayers to  Vishnu & Laxmi is  at  05:43 - 07:24, 14:08 - 15:49 or 15:49 - 19:11. The best to break the fast is on the next day Dwadashi is 05:54.


How to observe fast on Devshayani Ekadashi?

Devotees keep fast, spent the entire night in singing prayers. They vouch to observe fast for every Ekadashi day during the entire chaturmas, the holy four-month period of a rainy season. It means they would abstain themselves from any kind of food items & water. They read legend (khatha) behind Devshayani Ekadashi.

Legend behind Devshayani Ekadashi

According to legend, there was a king Mandhata belongs to sun dynasty (Surya Vansha).  He was a great ruler who was always busy in doing auspicious work to make his kingdom prosperous. Unfortunately, his kingdom was highly affected as it had not received any rainfall for over three years. Eventually, many people and animals died while others were severely affected.

Mandhata was tensed and started praying, performing Yajnas They are the sacred rituals to invoke deities using fire. The purpose of performing such rituals are to gain boons, including wealth, health and power. The ritual is performed by priests or learned Brahminsand observing many Fasts (Vrats), but all his efforts went in vain. He decided that he would not give up and set out on a journey. During the journey, he met many holy men with whom he discussed his problem. But, none of them could come out with a solution. At the end, he met Sage AngirasaAngirasaAngirasa
Brahma created his first son Prajapati to assist him in his work of creation of the universe.....
, who advised him to observe the Devshayani Ekadashi.  Mandhata went back to his palace and observed the fast along with his family members and courtiers. As a result, the kingdom received rains thereby ending the three years of severe drought. Mandhata and people of his kingdom were happy. In this way, Madanta’s kingdom regained its glory.
