Legend behind Devshayani Ekadashi
According to legend, there was a king Mandhata belongs to sun dynasty (Surya Vansha). He was a great ruler who was always busy in doing auspicious work to make his kingdom prosperous. Unfortunately, his kingdom was highly affected as it had not received any rainfall for over three years. Eventually, many people and animals died while others were severely affected.
Mandhata was tensed and started praying, performing Yajnas They are the sacred rituals to invoke deities using fire. The purpose of performing such rituals are to gain boons, including wealth, health and power. The ritual is performed by priests or learned Brahminsand observing many Fasts (Vrats), but all his efforts went in vain. He decided that he would not give up and set out on a journey. During the journey, he met many holy men with whom he discussed his problem. But, none of them could come out with a solution. At the end, he met Sage AngirasaAngirasa
Brahma created his first son Prajapati to assist him in his work of creation of the universe....., who advised him to observe the Devshayani Ekadashi. Mandhata went back to his palace and observed the fast along with his family members and courtiers. As a result, the kingdom received rains thereby ending the three years of severe drought. Mandhata and people of his kingdom were happy. In this way, Madanta’s kingdom regained its glory.
