Saraswati Puja On Vasant Panchmi 2016

The name Saraswati is a combination of two Sanskrit words...
Puja or Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Magh Shukla. This year it will be celebrated on 12th February 2016. This day is also known by the name Vasant or Shree Panchami.

Significance of the day - Birthday of Goddess Saraswati

 
It is believed that Basant Panchami is celebrated of birth of the Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning and the wealth of knowledge. 
 
In Hindu mythology, Goddess Saraswati is depicted as the deity with the four hands and holding a plucked stringed instrument called Veena (a musical instrument) in her two hands and seated on a white lotus with four hands (four aspects: mind, intellect, alertness, and ego) and wearing a pure silk white Sari. A type of an Indian dress  
Mata Saraswati’s favorite color white assumes special significance on this day. Statues of the goddess are dressed in white clothes and are worshiped by devotees adorning white garments. Devotee offering sweets as Prasad It is the sacred food that is distributed after an auspicious event or day after offering it to the Godsto all people attending the ritual worship.
 
It is believed that Mata Saraswati was born on this day. Students worship the goddess and prayer such as, "Oh Mother Saraswati remove the darkness (ignorance) of my mind and bless me with the eternal knowledge." 
 
Basant Panchami marks the starting of the spring season also known as 'Basant Ritu' and end of the winter season. In this day, a custom of ancestor worship known as 'pitru tarpan' is also performed in some part of a country. Devotee also worshiped God of Love KamadevaKamadevaKamadeva
Kamadeva is regarded as the Hindu god of love and desire. The name Kamadeva is a conjugation of two Sanskrit words “Kama” and “Deva”. “Kama” means “desire” and “Deva” means “God”.
is also worshiped on this day.
In eastern parts of India, generally in West Bengal, it is celebrated as Saraswati Puja. States of Punjab and Bihar, celebrate it as a kites festival.
 
 

Saraswati Pranam Mantra: Sanskrit Prayer

 
Here is the text of the popular 'Saraswati pranam mantra' or Sanskrit prayer, devotees chanting this Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mindon this day: 
 
Viswarupey Vishalakshmi, Vidyam Dehi Namohastutey ||
Jaya Jaya Devi, Charachara Sharey, Kuchayuga Shobhita, Mukta Haarey | 
Vina Ranjita, Pustaka Hastey, Bhagavati Bharati Devi Namohastutey ||
 
 

The celebrations

 
On this day, Yellow is the dominant color of this festival as it signifies the ripening of fruits and crops. In North India, mustard fields bloom during this spring season giving a yellow coat to nature. People's wear yellow clothes, offer yellow flowers to Goddess Saraswati and put a yellow turmeric tilak on their forehead. They visit nearer temples and offer prayers to various gods. People purchased new clothes for this Basant festival and many delicious dishes prepared for this particular special occasion.
