Thaipusam is an important festival dedicated to Lord Murugan or KartikeyaKartikeyaKartikeya
Kartikeya is the son of Shiva and Parvatiand is regarded as the commander- in-chief the army of the gods. Being the son of the supreme couple
. It is observed in the Tamil month of Tai or Thai (January – February). Thaipusam 2017 date is February 9, Thursday. In Kerala calendars, it is marked on February 10, 2017. Thaipusam festival celebrated mainly by the Hindu Tamil speaking community in India (especially in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh), Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka and in many other parts of the world.

Thaipusam also holds immense important in countries outside India that are populated by Tamil community in large numbers like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore, Guadalupe, Thailand and even South Africa.
 
Legend has it that Lord Murugan, son of Lord Shiva, killed Tharakasuran and other demons who were creating violence on earth on Pusam star in the month of Thai.
 
The most important event of the day is that of devotees carrying various types of Kavadi to the Murugan temples. The most important Kavadi pilgrimage takes place at the Batu caves in Malaysia.
