The body of the being is considered as the garment that is worn by the atman. Three separate layers surround our soul. The mind is the inner layer, the senses constitute the middle or second layer, and the flesh is the outermost layer.
The main problem arises when your mind and senses are unaware of the Atman within. You allow the ego to dominate one's life and action. When you are unaware that the soul is eternal (existing forever), and that the body is mortal (perishable). You become obsessed with the physical, sensual and material aspects of life. The more you identify with the body, the unhappier you become. If you wish to progress on the path of self-realization, you have to stop identifying yourself with the body.
According to the Psychologists, there are three ‘states’ in which human beings exist: the waking state, the sleeping and the dreaming state. But a fourth state is self-awareness. Unfortunately, you are so engrossed to trivial issues such as what you would like to eat, buy, and what you could do to impress your friends and neighbors and have no time for self-awareness. It means you remain in three states ‘waking’, ‘sleeping’ or ‘dreaming’ but not in the fourth state of ‘self-awareness’. Within us, lies ‘Atman’ that is pure, the centre of tranquility, serenity, self-knowledge and true awareness. Its aim is to meet with supreme soul ‘Paramatman’. When you understand this than you will experience true freedom from the desires, fears, insecurities, tensions, and complexities that bother us in our worldly life. It is the ultimate way to find the peace and joy that you seek so desperately. In this state, we will discover your own divinity. You will not feel pathetic or helpless human being. You take yourselves to be, eternal, the infinite spirit of pure, true, everlasting bliss. You will get free from unbearable stress and strain of modern life.
