Ambubachi Mela, also known as Ambubasi festival, is celebrated yearly during the monsoon season in the Kamakhya Devi Temple at Guwahati, Assam. The Ambubachi Fair is the most famous festival of the Kamakhya Devi Temple of Guwahati City. In 2016, the festival date of Ambubachi Mela is June 22nd and ends on June 26th, 2016. 
 
The Ambubachi festival is associated with the Tantric cult and is also called as Kamakhya Devi Puja. It is believed that Goddess Kamakhya goes through her menstrual cycle during these days and, therefore, the Kamakhya temple remains closed for three days. 
 
During these days, any kind of farming related work is not taken on. Daily worships and other religious activities are also stopped during the Ambubachi Mela of Guwahati, Assam. After three days, the doors of the Kamakhya Devi Temple are reopened. But the doors of the temple are reopened only after Devi Kamakhya is bathed and the other rituals are executed. It is then believed that the Mother Earth has retrieved her purity. This is purely a celebration of the Tantrik shakti cult.
 
On the fourth day, the devotees are permitted to enter the temple for worshipping Devi Kamakhya. Lakhs of pilgrims are found to visit the Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati, who comes all over the India.
 
Ambubachi Mela is also known as Tantric fertility festival and is a four-day Mela (fair). It is associated with the Tantric Shakti cult common in eastern parts of India and is famous due to the assembling of Tantric Sadhus from India and other countries. The Tantric Sanyasins also attract the media persons and foreigners. Devotees come from far off places to meet the Tantric Babas and take their blessings.
