About Gangasagar Mela 2017

Gangasagar Mela 2017 in January at Sagar Island in West Bengal

Gangasagar Mela 2017, also known as Ganga Sagar Yatra or Ganga Snan, is the annual festival of Hindu pilgrims to take a holy dip in River Ganga.  Ganga Sagar Mela 2017 date is January 14.

People also take Ganga Snan on January 13 and January 15.

The Gangasagar Mela 2017 starts a couple of days early and ends on the day after Sankranti. Devotees from India and all over the world arrive at Sagar Island to take a holy dip in sacred waters of Ganga River before joins in the Bay of Bengal.

Millions of Hindus take a holy dip in the morning on the occasion of Makar Sankranti day and offer prayers to Lord Surya. The holy dip is believed to wash the sins away and lead to the attainment of Moksha.

After taking Ganga Snan, pilgrims visit the Kapilmuni Temple. This is an old temple and is one of its kind in India.
