Aadi Amavasya - Praying to Ancestors
‘Aadi’ is the month in the Tamil calendar, corresponding to the July-August period in Gregorian calendar whereas ‘Amavasya’ means a no moon day. According to Hinduism, after dying, the soul of the dead passes from this world to the eternal one. They are judged according to their deeds and then sent to another realm to gain either punishment or reward. The transition from this world to another can be a difficult one, or a soul may experience problems in doing so. If that is the case, then a person closest to the dead might experience problems in his own life which can be in his marriage, education, job or any other arena. Therefore, it is important to help the forefathers in their smooth transition, and that can be easily done on Aadi Amavasya.
