Bol Choth- A Day Dedicated to Cattle
1th September 2015 (Tuesday)

Bol Choth, also known as Bahula Chauth is celebrated by the people of Gujarat. The festival marks the importance of cattle in the human live and how we are dependent upon them for our day to day activities like milk, transportation etc. The fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Shravana (July-August), according to Hindu calendar is celebrated as Bol Choth. The farming community of Gujarat gives immense importance to this day.

Legend

According to the legend, there was a cow named Bahula who was on her way to feed her calf but she encountered a lion who was hungry and eager to consume her. He wanted to satiate his hunger but the cow requested him to wait just a little longer. She wanted to go home, see and feed her child for the one last time. After repetitive pleas, the lion let her leave but only on one condition that she would come back otherwise he would find her and her calf and eat them both.

When Bahula came back home, she fed her child and narrated the whole incident to the baby. Though the calf was sad, but was courageous too and said that he would offer himself to the lion. Bahula rejected the idea and went back to lion as promised. The calf followed her. When they both reached to the lion, they both started offering themselves. The lion was amazed to see the selfless love, the mother and child had for each other. Since then people have starting worshipping cattle and their selfless way of always helping the humans.

Rituals

No one in the family consumes milk or any milk product on this day. The food is cooked under the open sky and is consumed in the courtyard. Women may observe a fast on Bol Choth. People clean the cattle belonging to their household and decorate them. They gather around cows and priests worship them by offering them food and flowers. The above mention legend is narrated and people listen to it with joy. People then join their hands and bow in front of cows. They are patted, loved and thanked for their gentle and helpful nature.
