Govardhan Puja

About 2014 Govardhan Puja Date in Pondicherry, India

According to Hindu mythological legend next day of Diwali is celebrated as Govardhan Puja. It is a prayer ritual performed to make offerings, honoring, evoking or worshipping gods. The ceremony can also be performed to pay homage to the beloved ones who are dead

The legend goes as follows:

Once there were the residents of the town of Gokul, who always worshipped lord Indra to bless them with a good monsoon so that they could have a good harvest. In that town Lord KrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
was there, he convinced them that the Mountain Govardhan was the actual facilitator for rain. They should pray to the mountain and not to the God Indra. On krishna's advice people stopped worshipping Lord Indra, they invited his rage. There was a heavy rainfall that flooded the entire town, with homes, people, and cattle all were flowing with the waters. Lord Krishna help them by lifting Mount Govardhan on his little finger, and all the town’s residents and animals took shelter under the raised mountain. In gratitude, the people created small mounds of cow dung to resemble Mount Govardhan, place flowers on it, and perform special prayers to lord Krishna seeking his blessings for prosperity. Since then the ritual of praying Mount Govardhan is performed every year after Diwali.

Bali Pratipada

According to another Hindu mythological legend, many people celebrate the next day of Diwali as Bali Pratipada in reverence of King Bali.

The legend goes as that there was the Demon king Bali, who had organized Yajna. He became very powerful and wanted to invade the throne of God Indra. Gods were afraid and requested Lord VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
for his help.  Lord Vishnu assured them that he would visit King Bali for their rescue. Lord Vishnu incarnated as Dwarf God Vamana. He asked him to grant him land that could be covered with his three steps. He promised to grant God VamanaVamana
In VAMANA Avatar, Vishnu incarnates himself as a dwarf priest...
whatever he had asked for.

God Vamana immediately put his one foot on the earth and the other on the sky then he asked king Bali where he should put down his third step. King Bali immediately bowed down his head and told God Vamana to place his foot on it. Lord Vishnu did so, thereby pushed king Bali to the netherworlds. However, Lord Vishu was pleased with the way King Bali kept his promise. He granted him a boon that he would return to his kingdom on the next day of Diwali every year to know the well-being of the population of his kingdom.

According to Another Hindu mythological legend, many people perform the special prayer of Mount Govardhan on the next day of Diwali.
