Guru Purnima is a festival celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists and Jain community. It is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of Ashadh (June-July), according to Hindu calendar. The day is dedicated to all the teachers, also known as Guru. The term ‘Guru’ is the compound of two words, ‘Gu’ meaning ‘ignorance or darkness’ and ‘ru’ meaning ‘remover or dispeller’ therefore a Guru is a remover of ignorance by bestowing the light of knowledge. He inspires and guides and also shows the path to spirituality. It is believed that through a Guru, a student can attain God’s blessings.

Teachers are worshipped on this day. Students pay respect to them for enlightening them and bestowing on them the disciplines of life. They wake up early in the morning and chant hymns to the teachers. Touching feet of Gurus and seeking their blessings in also a part of rituals. In some places, the feet of the Guru are washed and then the same water is consumed as Charanamrit. Thought in its literal meaning Charnamrit is the nectar from the feet from Gods, but on this day the Gurus are considered equivalent to the Gods. Faithful disciples fast the whole day and indulge themselves in meditation.

In many schools, a function or event is organized in which various cultural performances are made by the students. Students make offerings of flowers, sweets and small gifts to teachers. It is considered the ideal time to commence spiritual lessons from the teachers.
