Hariyali Amavasya - No Moon Day in the Green Monsoon Month

The word ‘Hariyali’ means greenery and ‘Amavasya’ means no moon day, thus Hariyali Amavasya is the moon festival which is celebrated in the month of Shravana (July-August), according to the Hindu calendar, on a no moon day. The festival is known by various names in various parts of India. For example, it is called Gatari Amavasya in Maharashtra, Chitalagi Amabasya in Odisha and Chukkala Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh. Along with the names, the festival is celebrated differently with various traditions and rituals throughout the country.

Celebrations in Rajasthan

The day is also marked as the celebration of nature. The lush greenery and freshness around spreads great joy and contentment. At many places, fairs are organized for people to come together and enjoy a relieving monsoon after scorching summers. Such fairs are famous in Jaipur, Rajsamand and Udaipur. People welcome spring and dance on traditional and folk songs. Women get ready in vibrant clothes and adorn themselves with jewelry. They also enjoy shopping and consuming sweets. A striking feature of these fairs are that they are organized for three continuous days out of which one day is especially reserved for ladies and admission of men is prohibited.

Celebrations in Gujarat

Celebrations in Karnataka

In this state also married women keep fast for their husbands and pray for their welfare and this ritual is to be observed for nine consecutive years. The difference is that unmarried ladies can also observe the fast in order to gain a suitable partner.

Rituals

The two main rituals that are performed on this day are Deepa Puja It is a prayer ritual performed to make offerings, honoring, evoking or worshipping gods. The ceremony can also be performed to pay homage to the beloved ones who are deadand Pithru Tharpanam. Deepa Puja means worshipping God by lighting earthen lamps. People get up early in the morning and clean their houses. They then decorate their homes with beautiful designs made with colors or flowers. They also place lamps on a mini table and offer it to God of one’s choice. The dedication can also be made to the five elements of life and nature which are air, water, fire, sky and earth. It is believed that this ritual can bring in eight types of wealth associated with eight incarnations of LakshmiLakshmi
