Kartik Purnima is an important festival of the three major communities of India. The three major communities are Hindu, Jain, and Sikhs A Sikh is a person who follows Sikhism as his religion. The term ‘Sikh’ has been derived from a Sanskrit word, Sisya which means disciple. The term used is appropriate for the people as they all follow the teachings of their teachers, the ten Gurus, and practice their preaching. They are known for their courage and hard-work. Male Sikhs use ‘Singh’ in their name, whereas women used ‘Kaur’. in India. It sets the beautiful example of Unity in diversity. Each community has an interesting legend behind the celebrations.

To start with, according to Hindu mythology, it is believed that once there was the demon Tripurasura. He was so powerful that he had conquered the whole world and defeated the God Indra, leader of the Gods. Demon Tripurasura then created three cities in space, together called "Tripura”.

incarnated in his form as Tripurantaka ("Killer of Tripurasura") killed the demon Tripurasura on this day. The killing of the demon and destruction of his city with a single arrow by Lord Shiva rejuvenated Gods. They started making celebrations and declared the day as a festival of illuminations. Since that this day is also called "Dev-Diwali" - the Diwali of the gods.

How Hindus celebrate Kartik Purnima:

Hindus usually celebrate this festival by lighting lamps and floating them on the small boat made of big leaf on banks of River Ganges. Many people burn earthen lamps in the temple or in homes in front of the Tutsi plant. It is celebrated on a huge scale in the holy city of Varanasi. It is believed that if you perform certain philanthropic acts and give donations to the poor on this day, then it can bring good fortune that is equivalent to ten Yajnas. They are the sacred rituals to invoke deities using fire. The purpose of performing such rituals are to gain boons, including wealth, health and power. The ritual is performed by priests or learned Brahmins Many people keep fast and chant Maha Mrtiunjaye Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mindin the multiples of 108 on this day.

It is advisable not to perform prayers in Inauspicious time (Ashubh Muhurat) on Kartik Purnima

Many fairs are organized on this day. The most famous one is the “Pushkar Fair” organized in the city of Puskar situated in the state of Rajasthan. People take a dip in the sacred Pushkar Lake.

Sikh Community:

On the same Day, Sikhs celebrate the birthday of their founder and first spiritual master, Nanak Dev on this day. This day is known as Gurupurab and it is one of the major festivals of the Sikhs. On this day, Gurudwaras (The worshipping place for Sikhs) decorated with lights and flowers.  Many Sikh devotees visit Gurudwara It is a place of worship for Sikhs. The name itself means ‘gateway to the Guru’. The holy Guru Granth Sahib of the Sikhs is placed in this holy place. Devotees sing, recite and explain verses from the sacred book. It is compulsory for a Gurudwara to have a Langar hall in which all people offer food to other people. It might also have a library or nursery. The most visited and well-known Gurudwara is The Golden temple. and perform voluntary services. On this day they enjoy the langar( free luncheon) provided by Gurudwara.

Jain Community:

Kartik Purnima is an important day for the Jains as well. The doors of the temple of Lord Adinath open after a period of four months. Thousands of Jain pilgrims visit to the foothills of the Shatrunjay hills of Palitana on this day to undertake the auspicious journey of 216 kms. to reach the temple of Adinath.
