that signifies omnipresence of almighty. He is depicted as half man – half lion.

Many Hindu epics such as Purusha Sooktham, Mundak Upanishad, taittriya Upanishad, Mahanarayana Upanishad have mentioned about God Narasimha and his importance such as follows:

  • Gods like Indra obey Narasimha.
  • All living beings obey divine commands of Narasimha.
  • Narasimha is the one whom immortality follows like a shadow.
  • Devotees who seek the blessings, protection of Narasimha must revere him with unshakable faith. They should offer the oblation in form of their soul.

Legend

According to Hindu epics Puranas, once upon a time there was the Demon Hiranyakasipu who had done severe penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased with his devotion, BrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)...
gave boon to him that he could not be killed by man or beast, in day or at night and not in his own Kingdom or outside. And also he could not be killed by any weapon.

When he received this boon, Hiranyakasipu conquered heaven and earth and declared himself as God and ordered people to worship him and not Vishnu. Unfortunately, Hiranyakasipu’s own son, Prahlada disobeyed him. He was a staunch devotee of Vishnu and wanted to worship him only.

Hiranyakasipu tried all means to change the mind of Prahlada, but all his efforts went in vain. He then tried to kill him but each time he escaped from the clutches of death with the blessings of Vishnu.

One day Hiranyakasipu challenged Prahlada and said if your god is omnipresent, he would be present in the pillar next to where he was standing. Prahlada answered that Vishnu was indeed present in the pillar. When Hiranyakasipu listened to him, he slashed hard on the pillar with his sword.

Suddenly, Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the form of a Narasimha and slew the demon at dusk when it was neither day nor night. Narasimha killed him by keeping his body in his lap and torn his body from middle with the nails of his hands.

What to do on Narasimha Jayanti Day?

Devotees keep fast on Narasimha Jayanthi and visit Lord Vishnu temples. Fast is kept from sunrise to next day sunrise. One can opt for partial fast also and can have milk, fruits and food items that are not made from rice and grains. It is believed that those people who observe Narasimha Jayanti fast will reach the ‘Vaikunta’ – abode of Vishnu.

It is advised to sing devotional songs in praise of Narasimha. The best prayer is to read chapter that mention details of Narasimha from the famous Hindu epic, Bhagavad Purana.

Annadhanam (donate food to poor) is performed on this day.
