Hindus find joy in every aspect of nature and universe and celebrating Sankranti is one such example. Sankranti is a festival celebrated when Sun moves from one constellation of the zodiac to another. According to Indian astronomy, there are 12 Sankranti in a year and one of them is known as Simha Sankranti. It is celebrated when Sun transits from the zodiac Cancer to the zodiac Leo. This day also marks the beginning of the Malayalam calendar. The day is considered highly auspicious for performing charity work like all the other Sankranti.

Celebrating Simha Sankranti

People of South India consider this day to be very sacred and begin many activities of this day, believing that they will gain success in their new venture. People visit sacred rivers and take a dip into the waters and this ritual is known as Sankranam Snan. They also chant God’s name and offer water to the Sun while taking a bath. Some also remember their dead ancestors and make an offering to them of food or flowers. They seek their blessing to have a happy and pleasant life. This ritual is known as Pitru Tharpanam. It is believed that this ritual helps in the easy transition of souls of the dead, from this world to another. Devotees consider worshipping Lord VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
equally important. Temples in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are decorated with flowers and lights and people come to visit in large numbers.

There is a Vishnumurthy temple located in district Kulai (Mangalore) whose presiding deity is Vishnu. Many rituals take place in this temple on the day of Simha Sankranti which include Narikela Abhishekha in which the idol of Vishnu is given a holy bath with tender coconut water while chanting mantras and Appada Puja It is a prayer ritual performed to make offerings, honoring, evoking or worshipping gods. The ceremony can also be performed to pay homage to the beloved ones who are deadin which Lord GaneshaGanesha
The guardian deity of Hindus, also known as the Ganapati (The God of all groups) is the son of Lord Shiva ...
is worshipped while singing hymns and chanting mantras. These rituals are continued for a month till Sun transits to zodiac Virgo.

Rituals of the Past

The festival also bore a great importance in the Kumaun region of Himachal Pradesh. Years ago, when royal families ruled the kingdom, the local craftsmen and artisans brought things made of their skills and expertise and offered it to the royal members of the family. People who didn’t have any unique skill, made offerings of flowers, fruits, vegetable and milk. Locals ate bread made up of horse-bean with clarified butter on this day.

Significance of the Festival

Performing the above mentioned rituals on Simha Sankranti promises prosperity and happiness. The darkness is dispelled from the life of the devotees and the light of blessings is brought upon them. Their ancestors also rest in peace which help the devotees live their present life, peacefully.
