About 2015 Surdas Jayanti Date in Tripura, India

Surdas Jayanti (23rd April 2015)

Surdas Jayanti is celebrated to rejoice the birthday of a blind saint named Surdas. His birthday is celebrated on Shukla panchami, i.e., it is the fifth day of the month Vaishakh (May-June), according to Hindu calendar. He is also a renowned poet who sang songs in the love and praise of Lord KrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...

), with his lyrics and voice, he captured the hearts and minds of people. A Mughal emperor named Akbar was his patron too and listening to his voice, he offered Surdas to stay in the palace but he preferred staying in the villages and living a simple life away from the comforts.

Surdas’ Lifetime

Surdas was born in 1478 C.E and because of his blindness, his family rejected him. He soon left the house, at the age of 6, to avoid his family’s hatred and inclined towards the praising of Krishna. He spent his days roaming from place to place and earning only through his singing skills. It is believed that once, Krishna came in his dreams and asked him to go to Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was a place where Krishna spent his childhood days. The purpose was to meet Guru Vallabhacharya who was an ardent devotee of Krishna. He taught Surdas everything about Krishna’s life. Moral values and philosophical teachings related to Krishna’s life and incidents were delivered to him. He was so influenced that he started writing more and more songs about Krishna and included small incidents of his life in his composition to preach people. He also became one of the most influential poet in the Bhakti It refers to devotion and the love one feels for God. People indulge in Bhakti to gain spirituality or salvationMovement. It was a medieval Hindu movement with the belief that true devotion to Lord RamaRama

and Krishna (both the incarnation of Vishnu), can help one attain salvation. He wrote all his songs in Braj language, which is the language of Vrindavan It is an important Hindu pilgrimage site where Krishna spent his childhood days. Mathura- It is a city in North Indian State, Uttar Pradesh, known for being the birthplace of Krishnaand has been into existence since Krishna’s birth. Surdas remained celibate throughout his life and made his devotion to Krishna, his only aim.

Celebrations

The day is mostly celebrated in the northern part of India, specifically in Vrindavan, Mathura and Braj. People sing the songs written by Surdas with complete enthusiasm and devotions. The air is filled with the spirituality of people who come from faraway places. People also chant out the manuscripts written by Surdas. Different types of musical competitions and musical nights are also set for the day. Many blind artists feel motivated and they also form a group to participate in the competition and display their skills.

Surdas’ Works and its Effect on People

Surdas had written over hundred thousand songs out of which only 8,000 are in existence. His works include the Sur Sagar, the Sur-Saravali and the Sahitya Lahiri. Through his work, he affected the life of many people who were looking for solace and peace. Even in todays’ time, discourses and seminars are conducted to teach about the preaching and life of Surdas.
