Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti

Sri Shankaracharya was an Indian Guru and a philosopher born in Kalady (Kerala, India) in 788 C.E. Shankaracharya Jayanti is celebrated to honor his birth anniversary. The day is celebrated in the month of Vaishakha (April- May), according to the Hindu calendar. At the age of 32, he disappeared and no one could gain any information about his whereabouts.

Life of Shankaracharya

Shankaracharya is believed to be an incarnation of Lord ShivaShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ...
(One of the Supreme Gods of Hindus, also known as the Destroyer). Approx. 2500 years ago, people were not satisfied with inherent spirituality and they were living in disharmony and discontentment. All the sages went to Shiva and prayed for a harmonious way and revive the world out of chaos. Shiva granted their wish and promised to be reborn on the earth in a human form.

Shivaguru and Aryamba were a Brahmin The conventional Hindu caste system divided society into four sects and Brahmin was known as the learned class who gained the knowledge of sacred texts written on Hinduismcouple (the purest caste in Hinduism, also known as the learners) and lived in a village. They were childless and one night Shiva appeared in their dream and promised them a son. He gave them a choice and asked them if they wanted a brilliant philosopher but short-lived son or many mediocre sons, living long. They opted for the first option and thus Shankaracharya was born. He studied all the four Vedas Four ancient texts constituting the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism(scriptures for Hindus) and at the early age of seven, mastered them. At the age of eight, he denunciated the world and decided to become a monk.

He met and became a follower of Guru Govindanath (known for his knowledge of Hinduism) and attained knowledge about Advaita philosophy (based on Hinduism and its religious practice), Upnishads (texts in Sanskrit about early religious concepts of Hinduism) and other Shastras (Hindu scriptures). He gained spiritual guidance and became a master in dialectics, logic and semantics. He had brilliant eloquence and won over many scholars with his skills and thoughts. He is also known as Jagadguru, the teacher of the world, as he affected the lives of many and saved Sanatan Dharma (religious term for Hinduism). He wasn’t in favor of any particular God, for him all the deities were different forms of one God. He established the thinking that God was one and only through the study of Vedas, one can gain salvation. He travelled throughout the country to spread his word.

Celebrations

Shankaracharya Jayanti is spent fasting, meditating and studying the works of Shankaracharya. People recite his compositions. Various parts of Shankaracharya’s life are also enacted by children and dramas and stories become a part of the day. Prasad It is the sacred food that is distributed after an auspicious event or day after offering it to the Gods(sacred food in Shankaracharya’s name) is cooked and distributed. Poor people are also given donations and kids are taught the real meaning of being spiritual.

Shankaracharya is known as one of the revivers of Hinduism when Hindu culture was declining and he recorded his teachings and philosophies in a doctrine named Advaita Vedanata and saved Vedic Dharma. He is known as an ever shining star in the sky of Indian philosophy and a savior of Hinduism.
