Legend Anant Chaturdashi

The importance and legend of Anant Chaturdashi were narrated to Yudhishter The eldest Pandavaby KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
.

There was a Brahmin The conventional Hindu caste system divided society into four sects and Brahmin was known as the learned class who gained the knowledge of sacred texts written on Hinduismnamed Sumanth who was married to a woman named Deeksha. She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Sushila and soon passed away. Sumanth married another woman named Karkash who was harsh and cold towards the kid. She tortured her and never loved her. When Sushila reached a marriageable age, she was wedded to a Brahmin boy named Kaundinya. Karkash treated him in the same manner as she treated Sushila.

The couple left the house and decided to make a living of their own. On the way, Sushila met a group of women who were performing some rituals. On being asked, they told Sushila that they were celebrating Anant Chaturdashi and observing a fast in the name of Vishnu. They told her about the rituals and the significance of the day and Sushila decided to observe the fast for herself and her husband as they wanted to gain wealth and prosperity.

She made a promise of observing the fast for the next fourteen years and as the years passed, the coupe became rich. One day, Kaundinya saw a thread tied on the wrist of his wife and asked her about it. Sushila explained that she has been observing a fast since years and it is because of that they are rich and have all the wealth. Hearing this the husband got angry and threw the thread away as he believed that their wealth was due to his hard work and luck. He didn’t believe in Ananta and claimed that his knowledge is the reason for their prosperity.

Soon their health and wealth started deteriorating and they became poor and unhappy. Kaundinya then understood his fault and prayed to Vishnu to forgive him for his sins and give him another chance to prove his dedication. But he didn’t get any response. He was disheartened and decided to give away his life by hanging from a tree.

He was then visited by a Brahmin who asked Kaundinya to follow him in a cave. Initially, it was all very dark but soon a bright light appeared from nowhere. There was a large gathering of people and the old Brahmin went to sit on a throne. Kaundinya, now, could no longer see a Brahmin, but only the God himself. He promised him to observe the fast for the next fourteen years. He fulfilled his promise and in return Vishnu restored his health and wealth.

Symbolism of Anant Chaturdashi

The reclining and resting form of Vishnu symbolizes inactivity which was his state of being before the process of creation took place. It represents the stability and the calmness one needs to attain before starting anything productive and useful. One must try to maintain such composure throughout the life and take decisions and face hurdles with peace and clarity of mind and actions.
