Annapurna Jayanti – Worshipping the Provider of Food

Annapurna Jayanti is a very famous Hindu festival dedicated to the goddess Annapurna. AnnapurnaAnnapurnaAnnapurna
Annapoorna is a Sanskrit name, composed of two words i.e., ‘Anna; means...
is regarded as the form of ParvatiParvatiParvati
After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva...
herself. The name Annapurna is a conjugation of two words - “Anna” which means “food or grains”; and “Purna” which means “complete or full”. Hence, the name Annapurna in Sanskrit translates to “the provider of food and nourishment”. Annapurna Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day during November to December.

Rituals

On the day of Annapurna Jayanti, people wake up early in the morning and take a bath. They then offer prayers and worship Annapurna with flowers, fruits, incenses, and food items prepared for the goddess as Prasad. It is the sacred food that is distributed after an auspicious event or day after offering it to the Gods After that, they are allowed to eat and drink something. The most fervent worshippers and devotees of Annapurna observe fast for the whole day. They break their fast after worshipping and offering prayers to the goddess at night.  One of the most important rituals of the festival is Annadhana in which food is offered or donated to the Brahmins It is one of the caste of Hindus. They are known for their knowledge of ancient, sacred scripturesand those who are needy and poor. Devotees recite Annapurna Devi Ashtakam, a composition dedicated to Annapurna, several times to please the goddess.

Worship and Beliefs

Annapurna is a very popular goddess of India; however, there are very few temples of the goddess. The two most prominent temples of the goddess are Annapurna Devi Mandir and the Kashi ViswanathMandir, both of which are in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The festival of Annapurna Jayanti is celebrated with great devotion at these temples.  Hindus consider food as holy, and it is a popular belief that without food one cannot survive, worship or even attain moksha. It is believed that celebrating and worshipping the goddess on this day ensures enough food for her devotees and the world for their proper nourishment. Annapurna Jayanti symbolizes the importance of food and the basic things for mankind, and that one must respect the amenities they get and not take them for granted.
