Bhanu Saptami- The First Appearance of the Sun God
20th November 2016 (Sunday)

Bhanu is one of the many names of Surya God and his role in Hinduism is extremely prominent. Bhanu Saptami is a day dedicated to him, in order to celebrate his first appearance in the universe on his chariot drawn by seven horses. In many Indian states, people celebrate the day as Surya Dev’s birth anniversary.

Bhanu Saptami is celebrated on a large scale, on the seventh day during the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Magha (January-February), according to the Hindu calendar and it is known as Magha saptami and Ratha Saptami. Some Hindu communities also celebrate the day in various other months and when Saptami falls on a Sunday then it is considered extremely auspicious as it is being celebrated in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September) in 2015

People take an early bath, specifically in a river, lake or a pond and make arrangements to offer prayers to the Sun God. One who takes bath at the time of sunrise attains a pious mind and soul. People recite Aditya Hrudayam which is considered the most powerful prayer to the Sun. After taking the bath, devotees should mix seven types of fruits with rice and let it flow in the water as an offering to the Sun. Some may also mix Durva grass It has many medicinal values and people who perform the rituals associated with the day, are benefitted by its positive effects on skin disorders, high sugar level, obesity, insomnia, fatigue, anemia and digestion. Hence it symbolizes purity of body. One can also purify his house by sprinkling water in all the corners using durva grass. According to some beliefs, the tip of the grass represents Shiva, the middle represents Vishnu and the roots represent Brahma. Thus it as pure as the holy trinityand sandalwood paste with it. Temples dedicated to Surya are decorated and observe a large number of devotees attending the prayer ceremonies.

At homes, women draw colorful patterns with powdered colors in front of their house to welcome the sun rays. Some people place cow dung in between the colorful patterns and burn it to purify the house. Married women fast on this day in order to gain virtues and knowledge whereas widows hope to stay away from the pain of widowhood in their next life.

A popular belief and ritual is to boil milk in an earthen vessel while facing towards the sun, it is considered as an offering to him.
