The name ‘Brahmacharini’ is a compound of two words i.e., ‘Brahma’...
(Uma or Tapacharini) is worshipped as the goddess who performed ‘Tapa’ (penance) and Charini means Performer. She is represented as two-armed Goddess that carries a rosary and sacred ‘kamandal’ and wearing a white saree. Kamandal is a water pot made from a dry pumpkin that contains nectar. The process of making Kamandal has a great spiritual significance. A ripe pumpkin is plucked, and its fruit is removed. After that, the shell is cleaned for containing the nectar. It gives the lesson to humanity that the person must break away from the shackles of the attachment to the worldly desires and clean his inner self of egoistic desires.  This will give the experience the bliss of the Self, symbolized by the nectar in the Kamandal.  Kamandal signifies living in the egoless state of mind.


Beaded rosary (Japa mala) represents continuous efforts (meditation and concentration) Kamandal represents acceptance and water in it represent pure thoughts. Beaded rosary (Japa mala) represents continuous efforts (meditation and concentration).

Goddess Brahmacharini is considered as auspicious, highly mediated and peaceful Goddess. She symbolizes love, loyalty, knowledge and wisdom.

People worship her to attain:
 

  • Religious Austerity (Tap),
  • Sacrifice (Tyag),
  • Vairagya (Asceticism)
  • Dispassion
  • Ethical conduct


There is a belief that the one who worship her remain unshaken in the most critical periods of life and does not deviate from the path of duty. By the grace of mother Brahmacharini, he gets success and victory always and everywhere.

Sugar is offered as ‘Bhog’ to Goddess Brahmacharini. This is known to increase the longevity of the family members.

As per Yoga Shastras, Brahmacharini is present in second gonad chakra (gonad plexus) called Svadhisthana Chakra. The bija sound for this chakras is VAM, which is considered important to remove the worldly attachments.

From that time, she also came to be known as Uma.
