As per the legend, once Vishnu was in deep sleep or can say in deep meditation (Yog Nindra). At that time, a demon named Murdanav came and challenged Vishnu to fight with him. As Vishnu was in Yoga Nidra, a young lady appeared from his eleven senses (Ekadash Indris). As soon as, demon had a glimpse of a young lady, he was so attracted that he wanted to marry her. But, the young lady put a condition in front of demon that he should fight with her. Demon Murdanav became so passionate after seeing that young lady that he agreed to have a fight. In the fight, the demon got killed by that young lady.
Vishnu became happy and pleased by the heroic success of the young lady. He granted her a boon that she would be named as Ekadashi as she appeared from the Ekadash Indris of Vishnu. Goddess Ekadashi She was a beautiful goddess who saved the life of Vishnu from a demon named Muran. The demon had taken control of heaven by defeating the Gods in a battle. The Gods finally approached Vishnu. He and Muran fought various battles. Once the demon tried to kill Vishnu in his sleep but Goddess Ekdashi saved him. Since then she has been his favorite who has been blessed with all the charms and qualities. She also asked for three boons from Vishnu and he accepted them happily.
told Vishnu that she wanted people to keep fast on the day of Ekadashi named as Ekadashi Vrat. Vrat is the Hindi term of fast . It is a process in which devotees do not consume food or/and water on the days dedicated to the Gods they believe in, to show their dedication and to gain health and prosperity Also, by observing this fast, people should get free from all evils and sins.
