The reason behind is interesting Hindu mythological story:
Once there was the King Hima. He had sixteen-year-old son who was destined to pass away by the snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage.
With the God’s grace, he got married to a beautiful and intelligent girl. King Hima told his daughter in law that his son would be died on the fourth day of their marriage. His daughter in law was brilliant, she made up plan. First she did not allow her husband to sleep on 4th day of their marriage. She lit up lamps and arranged some gold adornments as well as a number of silver coins and kept them at huge heap at the doorway of their room.
When the God of death (Yama) turned into a snake and visited their home to take her husband. Due to dazzling lights of the lamps and glitter of Gold ornaments and Silver coins made snake turned YamaYama
Also known as Yamaraja, Yama is the controller of the hell (Naraka)... sightless. He had to return to his abode empty hand. This way young girl saved her husband. Since then, the tradition of shopping new items started and lightens up of home meant auspicious for the family. Dhanteras is also known as the Yamadeepdaan.
Another story was long ago when Gods and Demons decided to stir the ocean to have the elixir. God and Demons churned the ocean and got various treasures, and they divide between then. After many days of struggle, on the day of Dhanterus Goddess Laxmi appeared and put the garland around the neck of VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. and became his consort. Demons and Gods further start churning then God Dhanvantri had come out from the ocean to provide the jar of the elixir. Since then people pray Goddess Laksmi on this day to fulfil their worldly desires.
