. Devotees carry out huge processions and dance in a frenzied manner till they reach a water body. They sing songs in the praise of the Lord and chant slogans like ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangal Murti Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa”. It is a way of praying and asking him to visit them again the next year. They throw flowers and colors on each other and fill the environment with energy and enthusiasm. Many musical instruments like Dhol It is a double headed drum played using two wooden sticks. It is slung over the neck of the player while he plays the instrumentand Tasha are also played in the procession. People offer sweets, curd, rice and coconut to the idol before submerging it. Aarti It is a Hindu religious ritual of worshipshould be performed and the person should go inside the water as far as possible and then let the idol go in the flow. The ritual continues throughout the night till the next morning.

The festival is thoroughly celebrated in Mumbai and four main locations to submerge the idols are Chowpatty, Lalbaugcha Raja, Ganesha Galli and Andhericha Raja.

Not all the families keep Ganesha’s idols at their homes for all the ten days. Based on the devotion and dedication, families can submerge the same either on the third, fifth or seventh day as well.

Significance

People often want to know as to why, on Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesh idols which were worshipped for ten long days are finally submerged in water bodies. They wonder why they can’t continue treating Ganesh as a family member, never letting him go. The ritual signifies that no one should get attached to any person or thing. Clinging even to Gods is inappropriate and with this sense of detachment the ritual of Ganesh Visarjan is performed.

Every Creation Gets Destroyed

Hindus believe in becoming one with the universal soul. The problem arises when they are unable to worship the ‘formlessness’ of this cosmic spirit. To overcome this obstacle, idols are made of clay and water to give a physical entity to the Gods.

When these clay idols of Ganesh are lowered into any water body, slowly the mud dissolves and blends with water, thus becoming one with the components of the universe. Similarly, our body, which is made up of five elements, has to return back to its source. The body perishes, only the soul stays eternal. This is supposed to be a cosmic law that nothing and no one can surpass.

This ritual reveals the ultimate truth that everything in this universe is in a constant state of change. Anything that has taken form will become formless again. No physical element sustains forever, not even the images/idols of Ganesh.

Avighna – Life without Obstacles

Ganesh is also known as vighnaharta, one who is the vanquisher of obstacles. When Ganesh proceeds towards his abode Mount Kailash, he takes away devotee’s sins, diseases, troubles, and sorrows and replaces them with happiness, health and enlightenment. Not only physical but spiritual barriers are destroyed too. After the procession, one feels spiritually awakened and enlightened. The old mutilated self is dispelled, thus embarking on a new journey of purity and righteousness.

God – Everywhere For Infinite Times

Submergence of Ganesh is also a way of understanding that God is omnipresent and omnipotent. He stays with us throughout our lives and no temple or Pandal It is fabricated and decorated temporary or permanent platforms used for religious ceremonies. They are largely used for public worship or to perform ceremonies related to a weddingis his permanent abode. Even though the physical form of Ganesh perishes, his presence can be felt always. He belongs to one’s soul and nothing can keep him apart from his devotees if their belief is strong and unshakable.

Please make sure that you do not immerse any plastic waste along with the clay Ganesha idol and be proudly part of the eco-friendly Ganesh festival.

With this belief, followers of Ganesh hope for Him to return to their homes every year recurrently, bringing peace and prosperity.
