On krishna's advice people stopped worshipping Indra, they invited his rage. There was a heavy rainfall that flooded the entire town, with homes, people, and cattle all were flowing with the waters. Krishna help them by lifting Mount Govardhan on his little finger, and all the town’s residents and animals took shelter under the raised mountain. In VAMANA Avatar, Vishnu incarnates himself as a dwarf priest...
whatever he had asked for.

Vamana immediately put his one foot on the earth and the other on the sky then he asked king Bali where he should put down his third step. King Bali immediately bowed down his head and told Vamana to place his foot on it. Vishnu did so, thereby pushed king Bali to the netherworlds. However, Vishnu was pleased with the way King Bali kept his promise. He granted him a boon that he would return to his kingdom on the next day of Diwali every year to know the well-being of the population of his kingdom.

According to Another Hindu mythological legend, many people perform the special prayer of Mount Govardhan on the next day of Diwali.
