Harela is especially a Kumaoni festival celebrate in Uttarakhand region in the rainy season. The celebration falls on the first day of Shravan.
In 2016, Harela Festival is celebrated on the first day of Shravan Month i.e, 16th July.
The Harela Festival starts before Ten days, local people prepare Harela bucket i.e, seeds of five or seven types of grains from amongst Maize (Zea maize), Mustard (Brassica spp.), (Macrotyloma uniflorum or legume), Jau (Hordeum vulgare), Wheat (Triticum aestivum), Traditional landrace(s) of Paddy (Oryza sativa), Mass (Vigna sp.) and Bhatt (Glycine sp) are mixed together and sown in pots inside the room, using small baskets filled with soil. The sowing is done either by the head of the family or the family priest. It is done ceremoniously. Water is sprinkled once or twice in a day after worship.
