Masi Magam, also known as Maasi Makam, Masi Maham, or Maasi Magam is an important day in the month of Masi (February - March) and it is most important Tamil Hindu festival which is celebrated by Tamil people. It is observed in Tamil month Masi during Makam Nakshatra. Normally, Makam Nakshatra prevails during Pournami or full moon day but that is not always true. Hence, Masi Makam, Mahamor Makam observation with the Magha Nakshatra(twenty-seven stars). Makam Nakshatra is also called as Magam and Magha.
In 2017, Maasi Magam is celebrated on 10th March, it is an important day and annual festival for Tamilians around the world. A major custom on the day is the bathing of Temple statues in sea, pond or lake.
On Masi Magam day, idols of gods and goddess that are worshipped in the temple are taken to the seashore, pond, river or lake for a ceremonial bath in a procession. The millions of devotees who gather the procession to take baths in the water to get rid of their sins.
Once in twelve years, Masi Magam attains special importance and then it is called as Maha Maham. This festival differs from region to region and sometimes even from temple to temple.
Masi Magam is celebrated not only in India but also celebrated in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
