Meera Bai Jayanti- Birth Anniversary of Krishna’s Devotee

Meera Bai is considered the greatest devotee and lover of Krishna. She was a princess who left all her comforts of a luxurious life to get drenched in the devotion and dedication of Krishna. She was a part of the Bhakti It refers to devotion and the love one feels for God. People indulge in Bhakti to gain spirituality or salvationmovement and believed that only with the love of VishnuVishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
can one attain salvation. Her life and songs all revolved around her affection for KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
and she couldn’t detach herself from an idol of his whom she considered her lifeline.

Life

Meera bai was the daughter of a King of Udaipur. She became an orphan at a very early age and since then she was taken under the guidance of her grandfather, who was a staunch devotee of Krishna himself. Meera developed an unflinching devotion towards the God and spent hours playing, talking, singing and praying to the idol.

She was married to a king but he died soon, leaving her to lead a life of a widow. She was not very upset of her new condition as she considered herself married to Krishna. She spent her days writing and singing hymns in the Lord’s name. Her parent-in-laws were not happy regarding her dedication as they considered her as a crazy woman. They were also worried about the bad name and reputation, she could gain for herself and the family with her way of life. They tried to kill her twice once by leaving a snake in her basket of flowers from which she used to make offerings to Krishna and then by mixing poison in her milk. It is believed that Krishna himself saved her both the times by transforming the snake into a garland of flowers and by converting the poison into sweet nectar. Experiencing such miracles, her in laws stopped harassing her and believed her true devotion.

Celebrations

There are no temples dedicated to Meera Bai as she is not a Goddess but people remember her as a woman who loved Krishna selflessly. She became the epitome of devotion thus people remember her on her birthday by singing and reciting the devotional songs written by her. They read the stories of her life and try to learn and follow the meaning and relationship between a devotee and his/her God.
