Ekadashi is celebrated on the eleventh day of the month Vaisakha (April-May). It is also known as the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha (month of Vaisakha). Lord VishnuVishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..

Significance

The significance of this day was told to Maharaja Yudhisthira (eldest Pandava, also known as the righteous king) by Lord KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
(one of the incarnation of Vishnu). Krishna told that the same fast was observed by Lord RamaRamaRama
As of late, in the year 2007, the idea of whether Rama...
(another incarnation of Vishnu) because he was upset about his separation with his wife, SitaSitaSita
Sita is the most benevolent Goddess, who is known...
. He suffered a lot during that period and wanted to end all the sources of sorrows and sins. Rama was enlightened by a sage named Vasishtha and said that the world is a materialistic place. It creates the illusion and is only the source of pain and only be keeping this fast, miseries of your life will be relieved.

Story of King Dhrishthabuddhi

Dhrishthabuddhi was one of the sons of the great king named Dyutiman. Though Dyutiman was the devotee of Vishnu and did all the good deeds, but his son always committed sins like drinking alcohol, sleeping with prostitutes, eating meat etc. Soon he was thrown out of the kingdom. He sold all the property and assets in his name to enjoy the worldly pleasure and became poor. His prostitute also left her, making fun of his poverty. He neither had food to eat nor clothes to wear. He spent his time in the forests, alone, killing animals to eat.

Accidently, he met a great sage and asked for his help to get freedom from all his sins. The sage, then asked him to keep the feast of Mohini Ekadashi. He followed the new path shown to him and soon left for his heavenly abode in Vishnu’s carrier.

How to observe fast on

One can only eat fruits and vegetables on this day. Milk products can also be consumed. Eating grains are not allowed. Also the food should not be consumed from a bronze utensil. You can consume a meal at night, but meat and onion are strictly prohibited. Also, nothing should be eaten thereafter.

One should wake up before sunrise and take an early bath. Sleeping on the floor that very night and the night before is a must. No lie should be spoken and no one should be hurt. Reading of scriptures and performing prayers, while placing the idols of Vishnu and Rama in front, are also the part of the ritual. Only clean clothes should be worn.

By observing the fast one can gain peace of mind. By taking the name of God, one can also attain salvation. This fast is considered to be more fruitful than taking a bath in holy water or making sacrifices.
