. Papamochani Ekadasi is also known as Varuthini Ekadashi.

Legends

The significance of this day was narrated by Lord KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
(incarnation of Vishnu) to Yudhishtira (a king known for his righteousness). Krishna narrated a story of a young sage Medhavi who was a true devotee of Lord ShivaShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ...
(another Supreme God of Hindus, also known as the Destroyer). He was performing a Tapas (austerity) in a forest named Chaitraratha. The place was known for its beauty. Flowers added to the scenery of the place and many demo-gods, apsaras (damsels of heaven) and Lord Indra (God of Thunder and lightning) came to take pleasure of the beauty.

Many apsaras tried to interrupt his meditation and have a love relationship with him but his mind and heart were very pure thus making his contemplation constant. Manju Ghosa, another Apsara, It means a female spirit and is almost comparable to angels. They are considered to be divinely beautiful females possessing supernatural powers. They are elegant and brilliant at dancing and sometimes seduce gods and men. felt very attracted to his sincerity and just looking at the sage she was overwhelmed. She applied sandalwood paste to her body and flowers to her hair and started singing in her soothing voice, with veena (musical instrument) in her hand.

Sage lost all his concentration and started following the voice. He was spell-bound to see the beauty of Manju. They got married and consummated their marriage. Manju soon realized that now when sage’s purity of mind and body has been corrupted, she did not feel attracted to him anymore. But scared of his yogic power (power gained through years of meditation), she couldn’t ask to leave. After fifty seven years, she finally gathered the courage and it was then the sage realized that all hard-work over the years had been wasted and corrupted. He cursed Manju that her beauty will be destroyed and she will now look like a demon and went straight to his father for help.

His father suggested him to keep the fast of Papamochani Ekadasi and eradicate all the sins from his life. Only then he will be able to pure his body, mind and soul and since then the ritual is followed by anyone who wants to gain apology for his mistakes.

Fasting and Rituals

People should not intake normal food. Only sattvic food, diet that is pure, natural, clean and energy-containing, items are to be consumed. For example, fruits, ripe vegetables, nuts and seeds. A spiritual bath is taken near a holy river. After that flower, incense sticks and sweets are offered to Vishnu. Devotees who observe the fast with sincerity and devotion also stay away from the influences of ghosts and demons. The fast also fulfills all the desires, purifies one’s life and makes a person virtuous and intelligent. It is also believed that fasting this day is equivalent to donating thousand cows in charity. They should wait for the sunrise on next day of Ekadashi to break their fast.
