Papankusha Ekadashi- The Day to Wash Away All Sins

Papankusha Ekadashi is observed on the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Ashwin (September-October), according to the Hindu calendar. This day is dedicated to an incarnation of Vishnu, known as Padmanabha.

Legend

The legend and the significance of observing this fast was explained to Yudhishter The eldest Pandavaby KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
. There was an evil hunter named Krodhana. He performed only sins while he was alive. Killing, committing violence, drinking etc., were part of his daily routine. Once YamaYamaYama
Also known as Yamaraja, Yama is the controller of the hell (Naraka)...
appeared before him and told him that he was going to die the very next day but before his death, all the accounts of his evil deeds were recalled. He was told about the punishments he was going to receive after his death.

The hunter became very restless and scared. He wanted to attain forgiveness for all his sins. He thus met a saint named Angira. The saint was a very learned man and told him about Papankusha Ekadashi and luckily it was the same day when the rituals could be performed. The hunter did as he was told and chanted Vishnu’s various names throughout the night. He soon fell asleep and Yama came to claim his soul. Despite of numerous efforts, he couldn’t take the soul to hell. He was rather given a place in heaven as he died while performing the fast.

Rituals

and chant Vishnu Sahasranamam. Offerings of incense sticks, flowers, rice, betel leaves and earthen lamps are also made. They fast for the complete day without even consuming water. Observing the fast for sixteen times in a row is considered very beneficial for life and afterlife. People also take a vow of silence for the day.

Charity performed on this day helps in gaining peace thus Brahmans are fed and poor people are given money and clothes. One should begin construction for public service works today.

Significance

One who observe a fast on this day is blessed with all the luxuries of life and is kept at bay from all the evils. He attains forgiveness for all the past sins and walks on the path of salvation. Liberation can also be achieved for the departed souls from both paternal and maternal sides till ten generations. The merit of the fast is considered equivalent to the merit of conducting, one thousands of horse sacrifices.

It is also believed that any person who chants the various names of Vishnu on this day never faces Yama and achieves that same spiritual pleasure and peace one attains after visiting places of pilgrimage. Devotees who seek for beautiful wives, wealth and good health observe the same fast.
