The legend was narrated by KrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must... to Yudhisthira and he also stressed on the significance of observing a fast on this day. There was a demon king named Bali. Though he was born in a demon dynasty, he was a just and honest king and a true devotee of Vishnu. Bali use to worship Vishnu with a dedicated heart and had made many fire sacrifices in his name. Once he got into a fight with Indra and to show his power and superiority, he took over his complete celestial kingdom. The kingdom was given to Indra by Vishnu himself. On the loss, all the Gods requested Vishnu to defeat Bali.
Vishnu then took a form of a dwarf, who was also a Brahmin The conventional Hindu caste system divided society into four sects and Brahmin was known as the learned class who gained the knowledge of sacred texts written on Hinduismand went to Bali’s kingdom to ask for some charity. This incarnation was known as Vamana. The dwarf asked Bali to give him the ground, he could cover with his three small steps to which Bali agreed, despite of sensing a scheme. Vamana then grew in his size. With one step, he covered the entire earth and with another he covered the universe. On being asking where should he keep his third step, Bali bowed down in humility and presented him his head. Vamana put his foot on the head offered, thus sending him to the Netherlands.
Impressed by his dedication and ability to keep his promises, Vishnu blessed him and his house with his eternal presence.
One should take an early bath and offer prayers to Vamana. He should visit temples dedicated to Vishnu and listen to a priest narrating the above-mentioned legend. He should also stay vigil at night, chanting Vishnu Stotram. He should not consume any food items made from rice, grains and beans. People can observe a complete day fast, but some can also opt for a partial one, allowing themselves to consume fruits and drink water. Devotees should offer a mixture of yogurt, rice and silver to a Brahmin.
One who observes a fast on this day is freed from the pains and greed of the materialistic world. He gains absolutions from all his sins and attains salvation. When he dies, his soul resides in the abode of Vishnu. The benefits of performing a fast on Parsva Ekadashi is equivalent to the benefits of performing thousand horse sacrifice.
