Putrada Ekadashi, also known as Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, is celebrated on the eleventh day of the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Pausha, which corresponds with the months of December and January, according to the Gregorian calendar. The term ‘Putrada’ means sons, therefore this holy day is considered highly auspicious for asking for a son. The day is also considered as the Ekadashi which accepts the plea for sons. This day is most famous in the northern parts of India.
The legend and importance of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi was told to Yudhishthira by Krishna. Once there was a king named Suketuman and his wife was named Shaibya. They both were upset since a long period of time as they didn’t have any child of their own. They were worried that no one will be able to carry out their name and also their soul will be lost in the land of the dead as there will be no one to perform their final rites. The king became fed up of all the worries and one day left his kingdom to go deep into a forest. There he met some sages and discussed his problem with them. They advised him to observe the fast of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi and all his problems will come to an end. As went back home and narrated the events of his day to his wife. They both then made preparations to observe the fast. They followed all the rituals and were able to complete the fast wholeheartedly and successfully. Soon their prayers were answered and they were blessed with a son. They loved and pampered him to the fullest and he turned out to be one of the most heroic king of his era.
Women get up early in the morning to make preparations for the fast. They take a ritualistic bath and chant Vishnu’s name. Then they visit any Vishnu’s temple or offer their prayers to him at home, after installing his idol. They fast and offer incense sticks, flowers, fruits and sandalwood paste to him. Couple can also observe this fast together. They can either observe a strict fast without even consuming water or they can eat only fruits while fasting. Rice should not be consumed on this day. Other items to be prohibited are cereals, grains and spices. Non-vegetarian items should also be kept at bay. People should keep their mind and heart clean with no negative thoughts, emotions and influences. One should meditate and think about Vishnu. Devotees may also read scriptures detailing about Vishnu’s various generous acts. His name and many mantras dedicated to him should be chanted and people should also sing devotional hymns.
