Radha Kunda Snan- Bathing in the Holy Pond
Radha Kund is believed to be a magical pond which is located in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. It is considered as one of the most supreme of the places. RadhaRadha
Radha, also known as Radhika and Radharani was a Gopi (milkmaid)... Kunda Snan is a festival when people come from faraway places in order to take bath in the pond and wash off their sins.
The most auspicious day to celebrate the event falls on the eighth day in the dark lunar fortnight in the month of Kartik (October-November), according to the Hindu calendar. The day is also known as Bahulastami as ‘Bahula’ means dark fortnight. Thousands of pilgrims visit this place and the bath is taken at midnight. Thus the ritual is also known as adiratri-snan.
According to a legend, there was a demon named Aristasura who was in the form of a bull and was creating havoc. KrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must... killed him and gained the sin of killing a bull. Radha then suggested him to take bath in the holy water. Krishna made fun of such a petty issue and struck the ground with his foot. A small pond was formed which was named ‘Shyaam-Kund’ after his own name. He took bath in it but Radha was not satisfied.
Radha, along with her friends, then decided to dig a pond themselves. They completed their activity using just their bangles and then filled the pond themselves by collecting water from another holy pond named Manasi-Ganga. They then asked Krishna to take a dip in the same for the atonement of his sins.
The pond came into existence at midnight thus the ritual of taking bath in the water is considered most beneficial when performed at midnight and this is the only ritual bath which is performed at such time.
It is believed that whoever takes bath in this pond becomes closer to Krishna and Radha, but one needs to perform the ritual with utmost dedication and devotion. Without the feeling of compassion and faithfulness, the bath would mean nothing and will not incur any positive effect.
Couples who are trying to conceive also take bath in this water. Thousands of couples visit this place to seek the blessings of Radha and Krishna so that they could give birth to a healthy child. They bring flowers, fruits, sandalwood paste and many other things to make offerings but the most commonly offered item is white raw pumpkin known as petha. It is decorated with turmeric and vermillion and then presented in a red cloth. Many couples visit the place even after their wish has been fulfilled to show their gratitude and thankfulness.
The feeling after taking bath in the waters is that of bliss and contentment. Spirituality resides in the heart and the soul and body become a temple of purity.
