Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in the Hindu month Shravana that falls in the month of (July- August) during a full moon day or Purnima day. Initially, Raksha Bandhan belongs to north and west India but soon People from all over India has started celebrating this heartfelt festival. It is the day that strengthen one of the noblest & loveful bond between the brother and sister. It is the day when sister tie the thread on the wrist of the brother and in return brother vouches to give love, affection and security for the sister. Thus, this day is called Raksha Bandhan as it literally means promise to tie the knot to make the pious relationship secure.

According to the mythological saga, on the full moon day of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar that falls in the month of July-August.  Yama, the lord of death, got tied a thread from his sister Yami. Yama was overwhelmed by the love of his sister that he declared that whoever got this sacred thread (Rakhi) tied from his sister would become eternal.

From that day onwards sisters tie rakhi to their brothers wish them a long life and brothers give their blessings by promising to take care of the sisters throughout their life.

Popular Historical reference behind Raksha Bandhan:-

According to historians, around mid-seventeenth century the situation of Chittaurgarh in Rajasthan state of western India. The situation got worsened when King of Chittor, Rana Sanga died. Mughal Emperor Babur, invaded the kingdom of Chittorgarh.

Chittorgarh’s queen Karnavati felt that she would not able to defend her Kingdom and sent Rakhi and letter for the help to Mughal Emperor Humayun. As soon as Humayun received rakhi and letter, he was greatly touched and immediately set off with his troops to help Queen and defend her kingdom.

Unfortunately, Humayun arrived late, and till that time Bahadur Shah managed to sack the Queen’s Fortress. Queen along with a 13,000 other women in the fort Of Chittorgarh, killed themselves to avoid dishonor while the men open and rode out on a suicidal charge against Bahadur Shah's troops. When Humayun reached Chittor, he evicted Bahadur Shah from the fort and restored the kingdom to Karnavati's son, Vikramjit Singh.

From That Day, It Is expected that the Way Emperor Humayun helped Queen Kamravati, similarly every brother promise their sister for love and protection from their side.

How people celebrate Rakhsha Bhandhan

With the passage of time, celebration of the Rakhi might have changed a little bit that one can find a wide range of rakhi’s in the market that include even diamond, gold, or silver bracelets also. Initially sisters get sweets, but now they like to add gifts such as chocolates, biscuits, dry fruits, mobile phones and any other gift item. Whatever way it is celebrated, but the fervor of the festival remain the same that Rakhi still create and maintain a unique and beautiful bond between brother and sister.
