Rama Ekadashi is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Vishnu, Lord Rama. It is celebrated in the dark lunar fortnight in the month of Kartik, which corresponds with October-November, according to the Gregorian calendar. Devotees observe a fast on the day and pray to RamaRamaRama
As of late, in the year 2007, the idea of whether Rama...
to gain absolution for their sins and eradicate all the evil deeds of the past. The festival is majorly celebrated in the parts of Northern India.

Legend

According to a legend, there was a king named Muchukunda who was a true devotee of Vishnu. He use to observe all the fasts on Ekadashi. He was blessed with a daughter whom he named Chandrabhaga. Like her father, she also was a follower of VishnuVishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,..
and use to give company to her father by observing the fasts. She was full of devotion and dedication for the Lord.

When she arrived at the right age, she was married to a prince named Shobhan. He was physically weak and unwell. Once Chandrabhaga asked him to keep Rama Ekadashi’s fast along with her. Even though he was unwell, he agreed to do so to make his wife happy. After few hours, he couldn’t bear the pangs of hunger and thirst anymore and died. When he woke up, he was a king of a kingdom which was on top of a mountain. His subjects were celestial beings. The kingdom was temporary and invisible to other beings. Shobhan was given this kingdom as a gift by Vishnu, for observing the partial fast. He could rule it only for  a short period of time.

Meanwhile, back at his house, Muchukunda performed all the rites and rituals associated with death but Chandrabhaga didn’t succumb to the unhappiness. She still kept observing the fasts.

Once a sage was passing through Shobhan’s kingdom and he was surprised to see the prince alive. Shobhan asked the sage about the well-being of his wife and requested him to tell her about his temporary kingdom. He wanted her to pray and keep observing the fast so he could be brought back to life and the kingdom could become permanent and visible to naked eyes.

The sage did as he was told and narrated the incidence to Chandrabhaga. She was filled with happiness. It was due to her perseverance that the prince was brought back to life and they were bestowed with a permanent kingdom. Since then Rama Ekadashi has gained eternal significance.

Rituals

The rituals are carried on the tenth day of the dark lunar fortnight in the month of Kartik which includes observing a complete day fast and abstaining from eating rice and other grains. People wake up early in the morning to complete their bathing rituals and visit temples dedicated to Vishnu or Rama. Offerings of flowers, incense sticks and sandalwood paste are made. A grand feast or Bhog is prepared and offered to the God and later distributed as a prasadam to the devotees.

An idol of Vishnu or Rama can also be placed in the house and worshipped throughout the day, people should stay vigil at night and sing hymns and devotional songs dedicated to him. Verses from Ramayana can also be read and recited to others.

Significance

The legend mentioned above and the importance of this day was narrated to Yudhishter The eldest Pandavaby KrishnaKrishnaKrishna
It is described that there are three aspects of the Supreme that must...
as he said “Ashvamedha Sehsrandi Rajsuyashtani Cha, Ekadashi Yupavasasya Kalam Maharindi Shorashim”, meaning that the positive effect by observing a fast on this day cannot even be matched by thousands of horse sacrifice and hundreds of Rajsuya yagya.

One should follow the rituals to gain the grace of the God and receive his blessings. He bestows health, wealth and prosperity on his devotees. It is believed that even if a culprit or an evil being hears the significance of the day, his sins are absolved and he gains forgiveness. Attaining spirituality and peace are also the outcomes of the day and it opens the path which leads to salvation and the abode of Vishnu.
