Rishi Panchami is more famous in Nepali Hindus. In some regions three days Hartalika Teej fasting ends on Rishi Panchami.

Rishi Panchami is also known as Rushi Panchami.

Legend

According to a legend, there was a Brahmin The conventional Hindu caste system divided society into four sects and Brahmin was known as the learned class who gained the knowledge of sacred texts written on Hinduismnamed Uttank. He lived in a small house with his wife and his widowed daughter. One day she was sleeping in her room, when suddenly her parents saw that her body was covered with ants. They were terrified and next day called a learned sage to know the reason. The sage told them that their daughter had committed a severe sin in her previous birth which was entering into the kitchen in her menstruation days. Thus she was affected by Rajaswala Dosha and to break free of the sin, she needs to observe fast on Rishi Panchami. She did as she was told, thus freeing her mind, body and soul from the evil deed that she had committed.

There is also a legend which teaches couples to live a fruitful life while giving importance to its rituals and customs. There was a Brahmin couple who ignored all sanctified formalities of life. The husband was filled with lust and followed only his animalistic passions whereas his wife took no precautions while she was menstruating. Thus both of them were cursed to be born as animals in their next birth. The husband turned in an ox and the wife was reborn as a bitch. They were only freed from their curse when their son and his wife performed Rishi Panchami’s fast and worshipped the seven sages. Their external animal bodies perished and their souls travelled to the humble abode. Therefore couples should also observe the fast and visit temples dedicated to Shiva on this auspicious day.

Rituals Rishi Panchami

Though men and women both may observe a fast, this day holds more importance for women as they try to get rid of Rajaswala Dosha. They take a holy bath using a specific herb called datiwan. They also mix various herbs with curd or milk and drink to cleanse one’s body internally. The above mentioned legend is narrated to them to provide them with wisdom.

The purity of one’s mind and thoughts matter a lot on Rishi Panchami. People should offer prayers in the most sanctified manner and only then their soul will be sanctified in return.

Significance of Rishi Panchami

In Hinduism, priests and sages are considered the epitome of spiritual knowledge. They can guide people to the right path of Dharma and at the same time help them attain salvation. On this day, all the past and present learned sages are remembered and prayed to. Saptarishi helped in the betterment of mankind and put numerous efforts to make human life better thus they are thanked for their selfless deeds and for teaching humans the basic principles of life. They passed down their wisdom and spread knowledge and enlightenment.

The sages are evoked on this day to obtain absolution from the sins that humans have committed both in the previous and the present birth.

Vedic Religion- It is the religion of Indo-Aryans which is considered the predecessor of present Hinduism.

According to the religion, devotees worshipped the five elements of life and nature. Gods like Indra were also evoked through the chanting of hymns and by performing fire sacrifices. Concepts of Dharma and Yagna were also considered crucial and of prime importance.
