Tradition and culture
This is a first day of the festival of the nine nights in honour of the goddess, the Divine Power. On the first day the “ghatsthapana” or “Kalash sthapana” takes place. Fragrances, flowers, incense sticks, ideas and rice. An oil lamp is kept burning throughout nine days. This lamp is called “Nanda dip”. Each day a garland of fresh flowers is tied before the goddess.
Many people keep fast. They read the chapter of the sacred book – “Durga Saptashati” that depicts the glory of Goddess Shailputri.
