Shakambari Jayanti, also known as Shakambari Purnima or Shakambari Mata Jayanti, is celebrated on the full-moon day that falls in the month of Paush, which corresponds with the months of December and January of Gregorian calendar. The day is celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Shakambari. She is prayed to in the times of food crisis as she is also considered the Goddess of abundance. The festival is immensely enjoyed in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu but the grandest event take place in Chennai in a temple named Shakambari Puram Shakambari. The day also marks the end of the nine-day long festival known as Shakambari Navratri festival.
According to the legends, once there was a very severe drought on earth which went on for many years. People were dying of thirst and hunger and were not able to do anything about except to pray. They worshipped various gods and goddesses, and Devi Bhagwati came to their rescue. She incarnated in the form of ShakambhariShakambhari

and came wrapped up in fruits, vegetables and green leaves. Her name suggests that she is the Bearer of the Greens. Since then, the day is known as Shakambari Jayanti.
The most significant ritual that takes place is bathing in the waters of any of the holy rivers. Devotees bath since early in the morning and continue the ritual throughout the day. They pay respect to the Sun God by first offering water and flowers to him, and then they sprinkle water on themselves.
