The auspicious day of Sheetalashtami, or Sheetala Ashtami, is devoted to Goddess Sheetala in the month of Chaitra (March – April) as per the traditional custom Hindu lunar calendar followed in many parts of North India.
Sheetala Ashtami or Basoda Puja is devoted to Goddess Sheetala and celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ashtami after Holi. Basoda Pooja is also known as Sheetala Ashtami. Normally, it falls right after eight days of Holi but many people discern it on first Monday or Thursday after Holi. Sheetala Ashtami is more famous and celebrated on the North Indian states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
According to Basoda customs rituals, families don't lit a fire for cooking. Hence, many families cook one day before and consume dopey food on Sheetala Ashtami day. It is commonly believed that Sheetla Mata controls smallpox, chickenpox, measles, etc. and people worshiping Sheetla Mata on Sheetala Ashtami to ward off an outbreak of those diseases.
