Shravani Mela 2016 at Deoghar Temple – Shrabani Mela at Baidyanath Dham

According to Indian Hindu mythology, The month of Shravan has great importance in Hinduism. Here team Charanamrit is introducing all the information about “Shravani Mela” which is held in the state Jharkhand. This fair is celebrated till 30 days in the Deoghar Baidyanath temple, Sultangaunj, Jharkhand. Legend says that the Shivaling of Deoghar Baidyanath temple was brought there by demon king Ravana that’s why the temple is also known by the name of “Ravaneshwar Mahadeo temple”.

Shravani Mela begins on Shravan Amavasya, no Moon day in Shravan month, and ends on Shravan Purnima, a full Moon day in Shravan month. In 2016, Shravani Mela begins on July 20 and ends on August 18 throughout the month of Shravan (July - August). Thousands of Lord ShivaShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ...
devotees from different countries come and undertake a pilgrimage from Sultangunj to Baba Baidyanath temple. This one month fair popularly known as ‘Shravani Mela’.

At Sultangunj, the river GangaGangaGanga
According to Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu in one of....
flows northwards. It is the one and only place where the Ganga flows towards North direction. All the devotees take bath in the Ganga and collect the Gangajal, the holy water from Ganga river, and carry it to the Deoghar Shiva temple. The Gangajal is used to bath the Shivaling here. This Shivaling is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams of Lord Shiva.

There is widespread belief among Hindus in North India that offering the Ganga water from Sultangunj to Lord Shiva at Deoghar is highly auspicious and it will help in destroying ignorance and help in fulfilling their wishes. The devotees that carry the Ganga water are known as “Kanwarias”.

Each Monday is devoted to Lord Shiva and hence, the heavy rush is witnessed on this day at the temple. The Mondays in Shravan month are highly lucky and people observe the Shravan Somvar Vrat. Vrat is the Hindi term of fast . It is a process in which devotees do not consume food or/and water on the days dedicated to the Gods they believe in, to show their dedication and to gain health and prosperity
