Tailanga Swami, also known as Trailanga Swami and Telang Swami, was a mystic who was believed to have spiritual powers. He was a capable child with inclination towards yogic practices. His parents and familial bonds kept him tied to the materialistic world but as soon as his parents died, he renounced all his comforts and practiced spirituality and meditated for twenty years. He started living in Varanasi and influenced many people with his teachings. Some of them considered him as an incarnation of ShivaShiva

Tailang Swami Jayanti is celebrated on the Ekadasi that falls during the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Pausha, which corresponds with the months of December-January of Gregorian calendar. There are numerous followers of his who believe in his teachings. Thus on this day, they read scriptures written by him in order to attain a better hold over their lives. They make offerings in his name and try to practice detachment as he preached that attachment to this ever changing world is nothing less than a chronic disease. People also to perform charity on this auspicious day and try to redistribute their materialistic gains with the less privileged ones, with the same idea of detachment.
Reinitiating Faith in His Teachings
He taught contended and controlled living. He reached that the man’s senses are his enemies if left uncontrolled. They are bad masters but can be good servants. They need to be controlled and emotions like greed, lust, gluttony, pride etc. should not be entertained.
