According to Hindu Traditions, fire (Agni) plays the significant part in creating, maintaining and destroying life on the Earth. It plays an important role in various rituals and practices to worship Hindu deities. It is very important to have the knowledge of a correct direction of the fire for different purposes. You have to face in the east direction to give offerings to the Gods through fire. To give an offering to the ancestors there is the requirement of facing south. After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva... united and gave rise to the divine energy that was produced for the birth of their son. The information about the birth of energy reached Tarakasur. He decided to obliterate the divine energy to prevent the birth of son of Shiva and Parvati. Indra asked the Agnidev to protect the energy from the harm caused by Tarakasur. Agnidev stole that energy to take care of the energy, but unfortunately Shiva and Parvati were not aware of the facts.
Agnidev failed to bear the heat produced by the divine energy and rush towards the forest to save his life. When Parvati realized about the loss of energy, she became furious cursed the deities that their wives that they would not able to conceive. She also cursed Agnidev that he would never be revered for good cause, in fact, whoever touch him would be burnt to ashes. The curse of Parvati soon started to show its effect as the trees of forests started burning.
Agnidev was terrified and started praying Shiva for the help. Shiva appeared and said that he was unable to nullify the ill effects of the curse by Parvati, but he could give him the boon that he would remain pure and whoever would get burned to ashes by fire, would also become pure. From that day due to the bliss of purity. Shiva christened Agnidev with new name Pawak.
