Ashwatthama was the son of Drona (a royal teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas)... means ‘’the horse-voiced’’ and he was given this name as he cried like a horse when he was born. He was the part incarnate of Shiva, YamaYama
Also known as Yamaraja, Yama is the controller of the hell (Naraka)..., Kama and Krodha (anger). He was a master of the science of weapons, martial arts and the science of self. He also had the mastery over 64 forms of arts and 18 branches of knowledge. In Mahabharata, a Hindu epic, he had been presented as the foremost among warriors.
Legend of Birth
Before becoming a teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas, Drona was very poor. Though he was married to a woman named Kripi, he didn’t have any child. Drona then performed penance for many years in order to please Shiva. When ShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ... came to grant him a wish, he asked for a son who possessed same valiance as Shiva. The wish was completed and Ashwatthama was born. He was immortal and it was announced before the Kurukshetra It is one of the many cities of Haryana which has a huge historical significance. The fight between Kauravas and Pandavas, depicted in Mahabharata, was fought on the grounds of Kurukshetra. Bhagavad Gita was also preached here by Krishna to Arjuna. The land is also known as Dhamakshetra.
war (a war that was a part of Mahabharata) took place that it was impossible to kill or defeat Ashwatthama. As he was a part incarnate of Shiva, he was not to be angered as it would be impossible to handle his wrath and fury, like Shiva.
Ashwatthama was very tall and huge, had dark skin and dark eyes. He was born with a gem engraved on his forehead which gave him the power over all the living beings who were lower in status than humans. It was supposed to protect him from ghosts, demons and other supernatural powers and also insects, reptiles and animals.
Role in the Kurukshetra War
As Drona and Ashwatthama were brought into the kingdom of Kauravas and Pandavas and uplifted their status, they were always true to the throne. They sided with Kauravas. Ashwatthama, personally, was also not much in favor with Pandavas as Arjuna (third of the Pandava brother) was very dear to Drona. Many times Ashwatthama felt that he was trying to replace his place in his father’s heart. Also when he asked his father to bless him with victory against Pandavas, his father replied that he should win this war only through his strength and not through the blessing as he had already blessed Arjuna with the same. He also believed that Duryodhana (the eldest son of the kingdom and the eldest brother in all) had the right to the throne.
Ashwatthama was fighting against Pandavas with all the rules agreed by both the parties but he got angered when they cheated his father and killed him. Pandavas and their war strategist, Krishna, knew how deeply fond was Drona of his son. Therefore on the battlefield they spread a rumour that Ashwatthama was dead. Drona was weakened by this news and left his weapons. He was hence killed though it was against the rules to kill someone who is without weapons. The truth about Ashwatthama was that Pandavas didn’t kill Drona’s son but an elephant who was named the same.
Pandavas also played another trick when they decided to injure Duryodhana by striking him below his waist which was again against the rules. So furious was Ashwatthama that he entered a Pandava camp at night, when everyone was asleep and killed everyone. He was unaware of the fact that Pandavas along with KrishnaKrishna

When Pandavas came to known about it, they were inconsolable. They all went in search of Ashwatthama and when he saw them coming, he became scared. By all the knowledge he had gained from his father and his teachers, he made Brahmastra (weapon of BrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)...) from a grass of blade. This knowledge was also bestowed upon Arjuna. He made one for themselves too. If both these weapons would have collided that would have been the end of the world, thus a sage named Vyasa asked both of them to withdraw their weapons. Arjuna had the knowledge to do so but Ashwatthama didn’t. Drona only gave the full knowledge of the weapon to Arjuna, thus giving him the upper hand, and not to his son. Also by knowing how to withdraw the weapon, one could create it again and again. Ashwatthama could only direct the weapon somewhere else and he decided to direct it on the womb of a lady named Uttara who was carrying the last child of Pandavas race.
Krishna got very angry at this decision taken by Ashwatthama and cursed him to roam around in forests, isolated and begging for food. He was also to be infected by various diseases. Krishna took the gem on Ashwatthama’s forehead and scratched it off and then said that the scar left on his forehead will always be oozing with blood and pus and this condition of Ashwatthama would continue for 3000 years, thus his immortality became his punishment.
