    About Bagalamukhi

    Bagalamukh i- Great Wisdom Goddess

Also known as Pitambara Maa in North India, BagalamukhiBagalamukhiBagalamukhi
Also known as Pitambara Maa in North India, Bagalamukhi is a goddess...
is a goddess of immense power. The name is the compound of two words where ‘Bagala’ means bridle and ‘mukhi’ means face, therefore she is a goddess who has a face that can capture or control. Just like a bridle, if put in a mouth, can control the movement of the tongue, similarly Bagalamukhi controls her enemies and those of her devotees. She can control both the physical and mental actions of anyone. She is also so beautiful that she can hypnotize anyone with the charm and glow on her face. She doesn’t have a male counterpart and exists independently. She symbolizes the potent female force that can exist solely on her will.

She is also known Brahmastra Roopini as she has the power of turning everything into its opposite. She can turn knowledge into ignorance, speech into silence and victory into defeat for her enemies and sinners and vice-versa for her devotees. She is the Goddess of dichotomy and symbolizes that everything in this universe has its opposite force. Thus she encourages her devotees to find happiness in their sorrows, afterlife in death and success even in their failures.

    Legend

Once there was a huge storm which had the power of turning everything into a chaos. Every God was terrified as they worried that every creation will be destructed. They prayed to Shakti, the feminine aspect of the universe and Bagalamukhi came into existence as only she had the power of stopping the storm and saving the universe. She was appeased by the prayers of all and thus brought order back by calming the chaotic storm.

    Depiction

The color yellow is associated with the Goddess. She herself is golden in complexion and is always dressed up in color yellow. Her throne is also of golden color and is placed in the middle of an ocean of nectar and is full of yellow lotuses. She is two armed goddess that holds a club in one hand and her enemy in another. She uses her weapon to hold the tongue of the enemy, thus silencing him and she beats him up. Her mount is either a ghost or a corpse.

    Benefits of Worshipping Her

She also smashes the misconceptions, doubts and delusions of her devotees. She helps them see clearly and thus imbibing in them the truth of life. She relives a person from his enemies, be it living beings or spirits. She erodes all the negative energies around her devotee. She bestows success, health, prosperity and confidence to her devotees which help them face all the difficulties of life without fear and with a clarity of mind. She rules out deceit that is in the hearts of many.

Her name is often interpreted as the ‘the crane headed one” and just like a crane swallows the whole of its prey, similarly Goddess, metaphorically swallows the pride of the sinners.  She also smashes ego and bring out a person with a clear conscience. She can use trickery, in a positive manner, to bring out deeper hidden truths.

People offer yellow clothes, yellow rice and yellow flowers while praying to her. They themselves wear yellow clothes and sit on a platform facing east which also should be covered by a yellow cloth.
