Bhavani is greatly worshipped in Maharashtra as she was the tutelary deity of their Maratha leader Shivaji. She motivated and inspired him to establish his kingdom. She is regarded as Kuldevi by many families residing in Maharashtra. Bhavini is also considered Lord Vishnu’s sister who came on earth as the sister of KrishnaKrishna

When a sage named Kardabh died, he left behind his wife, Anubhuti with an infant. Anubhuti performed severe penance in order to gain blessings for her child from Bhavini. But during her meditation, a demon named Kukur, tried to assault her. Bhavini sees her devotee in trouble and comes to help her. She kills the demon. On the request of her devotee, Bhavini agrees to reside in the mountain ridges.
Bhavani is an eight-armed Goddess who holds various kinds of weapons like trident, dagger, arrow, chakra, conch, bow and a bowl. Her lowermost left hand holds a head of a demon named Mahishasura He was a demon who had the power to transform into a buffalo at will. He was blessed by Brahma that no man could kill him. He wanted to take over the heaven and conquer the universe. Durga failed him in his attempt by fighting and killing him. According to some legends, he is believed to be a great devotee of Durga, who played her enemy on her request as she wanted to teach the value of heaven to various Godswhom she killed to bring order in the universe. Her left leg is kept on the ground but her right leg is depicted on the chest of the remaining body of Mahishasur. Her mount is a lion symbolizing her power and grandeur. Sun and moon are also presented on the sides of the deity as they witness the end of the demon.

Bhavini is another fierce incarnation of Shakti but she is also the giver... is Tulja Bhavani temple that is located in Tuljapur (Osmanabad district of Maharashtra). The idol placed in this temple is 3 foot high and 2 foot wide, made up of black granite. The most striking feature of this idol is that it is not fixed. It can be moved and it is moved thrice a year when it is placed on a silver bed in a private room made for Bhavini to rest. The idol is decorated with ornaments. She also has a self-manifested shiva-lingam in her crown.
Worshipping her and taking her names three times each day with utmost dedication can free people from illness, sorrows, sins and unexpected death. Because of her love for her devotees, she is known as Karuna Swaroopini, meaning, one who is filled with mercy. She is also called Twarita-Turja-Tulaja which means she rushes to provide help to her devotees in their difficult times and fulfill all their wishes. She is worshipped by women in labor as she bestows her blessings on the mothers and their newly born babies.
