Legend of Bhrigu
Once many sages, together, were performing a fire sacrifice but they didn’t know who from the three Supreme Gods, i.e., Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, were to be offered their prayers. They gave the responsibility to Bhrigu and he decided to pay visit to each God one by one and then decide. He first went to BrahmaBrahma
According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)... who was busy meditating. He didn’t notice the presence of the sage. Bhrigu got furious and left his abode to meet another God.
Bhrigu then visited ShivaShiva
Shiva is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindu Trinity that ... but even he was busy to notice the presence of the sage thus ended up being cursed. Bhrigu cursed him that he will only be worshipped in the form of the lingam. Finally he visited VishnuVishnu
Vishnu is one of the Supreme Gods of Hindus and is a part of Hindu Trinity,.. who was relaxing. Bhrigu couldn’t tolerate being unnoticed thus he stamped on Vishnu’s chest. Vishnu suddenly became aware of his mistake and held the foot of Bhrigu. He became concerned about Bhrigu’s welfare. He said that because his chest is strong, he didn’t feel pain but Bhrigu’s foot is not so strong and it might be hurting. He held Bhrigu’s foot and started pressing it to provide comfort to the sage. It is believed that there was a third eye on Bhrigu’s foot which was the window to his knowledge and also ego. In the act of providing comfort, Vishnu, by mistake smashed the third eye, thus giving Bhrigu clarity of thought and enlightened him.
Meanwhile this act was witnessed by LakshmiLakshmi
Lakshmi is a Hindu goddess who is regarded as the ultimate deity of wealth... and she became angry of Bhrigu’s bad treatment with her consort. She cursed Bhrigu that she will never visit any Brahmin The conventional Hindu caste system divided society into four sects and Brahmin was known as the learned class who gained the knowledge of sacred texts written on Hinduismbecause of him thus leaving no way for them to earn their living and sustaining. Bhrigu repented for his mistake and asked for forgiveness to which Lakshmi replied that the curse will still be a part of every Brahmin’s life but as soon as they will worship Vishnu, they will be relieved from its effect. Bhrigu realized his mistake and went back to the sages to tell them to offer all their prayers to Vishnu.
For very long, fights between demons and gods were taking place. Demons meditated for years in the name of Brahma to gain some kind of special powers and boons but Vishnu always found some loopholes and helped the Gods. Shukracharya, the son of Bhrigu, was the teacher of demons. He decided to go to the mountains to help demons and started performing penance in the name of Shiva to gain a boon which didn’t have any loophole for Vishnu to exploit. But without the presence of Shukracharya, the demons became weak and were being killed by Gods. They went to Usana for help. She assured them protection by using her powers through which she could make the gods immobile. This gave the right opportunity to demons to attack Gods. Demons tortured various Gods through this strategy and soon the Gods again went to Vishnu for help.
Vishnu was in deep trouble as it was against the path of righteousness to kill a lady but without killing Usana, Gods could never defeat the demons. The only correct way to kill her was if she attacked him first, therefore he then took the form of a beast. Scared Usana tried to attack and seizing the opportunity, Vishnu killed her. Bhrigu was not at home when this incidence took place. When he came back, he was heartbroken to see Usana dead. He then cursed Vishnu that he would take birth on earth time and again and get stuck in the cycle of life and death. He would experience the pangs of separation and all the sufferings a man goes through. Therefore, it is believed that Vishnu took so many incarnations to free himself on Bhrigu’s curse.
