    About Brahmacharini

    Brahmacharini - Penance with Purity

    The name ‘Brahmacharini’ is a compound of two words i.e., ‘Brahma’ which means penance and ‘charini’ means a female followers. Thus she is the female who practiced severe penance. She is a manifestation of Goddess Durga. She represents love, loyalty, peace, prosperity, emancipation, nobility, wisdom and knowledge and is prayed to by people who want to gain all such qualities. This form of Durga is effulgent and majestic. She is also very generous and fulfills all the wished of her devotees.

    Depiction


    She holds a rosary in one hand signifying continuous flow of knowledge and a water utensil called Kamandalu in her left hand which represents simple and self-contained life. She doesn’t have a mount and walks on her bare feet, signifying her simplicity. She is often depicted in white clothes and is decorated with flowers. Sometimes she is ornamented with a headdress and a waistband, though her most adorned ornament is Rudraksha. She is always full of merriment and has Shiva’s name in her heart, forever. She represents the unmarried and pure form of a woman who can attain anything by great devotion, immense love and patience to bear hardships.

According to sage Narada's advice, she started performing penance. So pure was her dedication that she solely survived on leaves. She neither consumed food nor water. She suffered all kinds of troubles like scorching sun, biting cold etc., to prove her worth to Shiva. She became very lean and thin and all the three worlds were worried about her well-being.     After the death of Shiva's first love Sati, Shiva...
    as his wife and he named this form of her as Brahmacharini.

    Navratri is a festival of nine days in which each day is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Goddess Durga. The second day of this festival is dedicated to BrahmachariniBrahmachariniBrahmacharini
    The name ‘Brahmacharini’ is a compound of two words i.e., ‘Brahma’...
    and people worship her to be more intellectual and virtuous. They also pray to her to acquire power so that they can fast through all the nine days of the festival and abstain themselves of food and water just as she did in her penance. She protects them from falling ill or having any adverse effect on their health during fasting. People recite the following Mantra A group of sacred words chanted in order to gain something, be it materialistic pleasures or peaceful mindto overcome all the difficulties in one’s life.

    Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmacharin Anuttama


    People offer sugar and fruits to the Goddess and request her to provide them freedom from anger and the cycle of life and death. She is also the provider of emotional stability which gives strength to surpass even the darkest phase of life. To keep negativity at bay and to seek forgiveness for negative deeds, one may also chant the following

    ‘Om Doom Durgaya Namah’.
