According to Hindu mythology, Brihaspati, also written as Bruhaspati, is teacher of all gods, in contrast with Shukracharya who taught all the demons. He is thus also known as Guru and Devaguru. He is beloved by all gods and is also the lord of sacred speech. His ability to read minds makes him the Lord of Power too. He is also considered to be the personification of religion. Sacrifices made by people and offered to gods are interceded by him on behalf of the mankind. He is the God of wisdom and eloquence and enlightens the minds of gods and human alike and for the same reason he is called the Lord of light, one who lightens the path through intellect.

(one of the Supreme God of Hindus, also known as the Creator). Angiraa was one of the Maanas Putra (sons born from the mind) of Brahma and he fathered Brihaspati with his wife Shraddhaa. It is believed that Shraddhaa was unfaithful to her husband and Brihaspati was born out of the norms of the wedlock. She gave birth to stillborn child but when she repented for her mistake, Angiraa gave life to the child and accepted them both as family.
The color yellow is associated to Brihaspati. He is described as of yellow or golden in color. He sits on a lotus and his chariot is drawn by eight yellow horses. He is a youthful God with big-bellied body and a broad chest and is very fond of sweets. At times he is also presented on the back of the elephant. He holds a stick in one hand and beads in another. He is known as the planet Jupiter and the day, Thursday is attributed to his name. The element, metal, gemstone and food related to him are ether, gold, yellow sapphire and chickpea respectively. He rules over winter season and North-East direction. Indra (Lord of thunder and lightning) is his presiding deity.
