Budha is the God of merchants as it is believed that Budha gives the mind clarity to distinguish between good and evil decisions and actions. Thus he is the protector of merchandise and people who earn with their business skills. Green in color, Budha is considered intelligent and eloquent and possesses the power of expressing with great verbal skills. He is four armed and holds a club, a shield and a scimitar in three of his hands and one hand is placed in varada mudra (the giving pose) i.e., he uses that hand to bless people and grant their wishes. He rides a lion and is the god presiding over Wednesday (Budhavara). He is also known as Bodhan, Saumya and Somaj.

According to Hinduism, the whole creation is the work of Trimurti (the Hindu Trinity)... (one of the Supreme Gods of Hinduism, also known as the creator) thought of intervening. He was close to Chandra and considered him as his own son. He was successful in persuading Chandra to return Tara back to her husband. But she was already pregnant and later on gave birth to Budha. After knowing the truth, it is believed, that Brihaspati reduced her to ashes. She was brought back to life by Brahma and only after being purified by the fire, she was accepted back by her husband.
Budha was a beautiful and intelligent child. He was very fast in learning and grasping new things. Impressed by his intellect, Brihaspati accepted him as his own son and taught him sacred scriptures. Budha was married to Ila, also known as the Goddess of speech and they together had a son named Pururavas, the first kin fog Aila dynasty (kings of ancient India). Budha governs the people with Gemini and Virgo as their sun signs and bestow them with qualities like intelligence, communication and senses. Also people born under the influence of Budha are considered to be good in mathematics, science, business and research. The color, element, metal and gemstone related to him are green, earth, zinc and emerald. He governs autumn season and north direction. Vishnu is his presiding deity.
Budha showers his devotees with wisdom and wealth. Praying to him and fasting on Wednesdays will lead to a smooth life. He helps in attaining possessions like lands and property. Though Budha is considered to be a very auspicious planet but if he transgresses from his position, it can lead to natural calamities like floods and storms.
